1920–2012
Dr Jean Hugill is remembered as one of the first female specialist physicians on the West Coast. She gradu­ated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta in 1946 and completed her anesthesia training at McGill University in 1950.

1925–2012
Jim died 1 April at Kelowna General Hospital with his loving family at his side. He was born 20 July 1925 in Winnipeg, where he attended high school. Following discharge from the army he obtained his medical degree at the University of Manitoba in 1952.

Follow-up programs can reduce chronic heart failure deaths
A new Cochrane systematic review finds that chronic heart failure patients who are contacted in active follow-up programs after leaving hospital are less likely to have died a year after discharge than those given standard care. Patients in such programs are also less likely to be readmitted in the 6 months following discharge.

Of the almost 5 million seniors age 65 and older in Canada, 7.1% live in care facilities—nursing homes, chronic care, or long-term care hospitals (4.5%), or residences for seniors (2.6%). Census data from 2011 also show that although most seniors are living in their own homes, almost 30% of seniors age 85 and over live in special care facilities.
