EMR adoption in British Columbia is now at 80% of target full-service family practice and specialist physicians, one of the highest rates in Canada along with Ontario and Alberta. We expect that this number will reach 85% to 90% within the next 6 months. As EMR adoption reaches ubiquity, the focus of everyone involved is shifting toward optimal use of EMRs and their interconnectivity to one another, as well as to PharmaNet and the Provincial Laboratory Information Solution (PLIS).

Harvey was born to Frank and Lil Schroyen in November 1950. Frank, a skilled carpenter, was lucky to find work with United Keno Hill Mines at Elsa, a remote frontier mining camp with few other families or women. Elsa is just south of the Arctic Circle, deep in Yukon Territory, and November is always dark, cold, and frozen solid with temperatures often reaching -45°F.

Dr Arun Jagdeo, a resident at the University of British Columbia, was presented with the 2013 Kristin Sivertz Resident Leadership Award at the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE) in September. The award, presented to two winners, recognizes leaders in specialty education.

In September the Arthritis Society announced the commitment of over $4.5 million in funding for arthritis research projects in Canada. A total of 29 grants were awarded to researchers at institutions across the country, including Dr Mary De Vera, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia.

The Order of British Columbia is an official part of the Canadian Honours System and recognizes those who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of their fellow citizens in the province. This year three BC physicians were presented with the honor: Drs Finley Armanious, Paula Gordon, and Charles H. Scudamore.
