In 2008, a pregnant female in her 30s presented to a British Col­um­bia hospital with a stiff neck, fever, back pain, and headache at 21 weeks’ gestation. She went into premature labor and delivered a stillborn baby the following day. Listeria mono­cytogenes was isolated from her blood and the placenta.

Nutrition is a favorite topic in British Columbia’s health-conscious environment. It’s important that physicians are armed with current, evidence-based nutrition information in order to answer pa­tients’ questions or concerns, and perhaps challenge any misinformation presented. We have tried to address a few of the most common topical nutrition issues and hope that you will find them useful.

About 25 years ago I received a phone call from a member of the BCMA Board of Directors asking if I would be interested in becoming a member of the BCMJ Editorial Board. My initial thought at the time was to graciously decline as my three hyperactive, time-eating kids and a harried “what do you mean, you’re on call this weekend again” wife were about all the extra-to-the-office commitments my 251/2 hour day would allow.

In order to achieve the goals for healthy living and a quality health system articulated by the government of British Columbia, a sustainable health human resource base is critical. 

The Conversation on Health has already shown that British Co­lumbians want appropriate access to physicians, and that they want to see a patient-centred model of interprofessional education and collaborative practice to ensure that health care providers are available throughout the province.
