Latest PSP module to launch across BC in September—open to all GPs

A new Practice Support Program (PSP) module is set to launch across the province this fall. The mental health module—much more clinically oriented than other PSP modules to date—has been specifically designed to meet the needs of general practitioners and their medical office assistants, all of whom are on the front line of mental health care in BC.

During the recent automobile crisis, President Obama’s pledge that buyers of Chrysler or GM cars could rest assured that the government would back up their new car warranty was widely supported. Yet, a promise of guaranteed care for American citizens provokes a divisive debate. 

Why is it acceptable for a government to promise to fix a broken car but not a sick or injured human? The answer is that in both the US and Canada, when it comes to health care, partisan political rhetoric has trumped reasoned debate.

Early in 2009 the BCMJ contracted Ipsos Reid to run focus groups to hear physician feedback about the value of the Journal. Four focus groups, with a total of 32 participants, were conducted in Vancouver (two sessions), Victoria, and Penticton.

Older adults represent the fastest growing age group worldwide. In Canada there were 4.3 million Canadians age 65 and older in 2002, a 66% increase over the last 20 years.[1] This demographic imperative will continue into the future with the 65-and-older population in Canada set to double in the next [2] decades while the 85-and-older population will quadruple.
