Mr Alessandro Cau is the winner of the J.H. MacDermot Prize for Excellence in Medical Journalism (Independent), which recognizes a BC medical student’s significant achievement in writing an article without any physician coauthors, for his article “Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors: A new era of kidney care.”

Mr Cau is a fourth-year medical student at the University of British Columbia. He is passionate about all things medicine as well as research and health care quality improvement. Throughout medical school and his future career, Mr Cau hopes to help make the health care system more safe, accessible, equitable, and efficient. Outside of school, he enjoys playing soccer and tennis and spending time with friends and family.

Ms Raheesa Jina is the winner of the J.H. MacDermot Prize for Excellence in Medical Journalism (Mentored), which recognizes a BC medical student’s significant achievement in medical writing as part of an author team that includes physicians, for her article “Managing menopause part 1: Vasomotor symptoms.”

A third-year student in UBC’s Vancouver Fraser Medical Program, Ms Jina has a long-standing passion for women’s health. From leading gynecologic research projects to reproductive and sexual health initiatives with the Canadian Federation of Medical Students, she hopes to continue empowering women and promoting their health and safety.

The BCMJ welcomes article submissions from BC medical students and offers these two writing prizes for the best submissions accepted for publication. The prizes distinguish between student articles written with and without physician coauthors. A winning article for each prize is selected from all eligible articles published in a calendar year. Each winner receives $750 and recognition in the BCMJ and at the Doctors of BC annual awards ceremony.

About the ICMJE and citation styles

The ICMJE is small group of editors of general medical journals who first met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1978 to establish guidelines for the format of manuscripts submitted to their journals. The group became known as the Vancouver Group. Its requirements for manuscripts, including formats for bibliographic references developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), were first published in 1979. The Vancouver Group expanded and evolved into the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which meets annually. The ICMJE created the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals to help authors and editors create and distribute accurate, clear, easily accessible reports of biomedical studies.

An alternate version of ICMJE style is to additionally list the month an issue number, but since most journals use continuous pagination, the shorter form provides sufficient information to locate the reference. The NLM now lists all authors.

BCMJ standard citation style is a slight modification of the ICMJE/NLM style, as follows:

  • Only the first three authors are listed, followed by "et al."
  • There is no period after the journal name.
  • Page numbers are not abbreviated.
