The BC Medical Journal is a general medical journal published by Doctors of BC, a voluntary association of more than 16 000 physicians, residents, and medical students in British Columbia, Canada.
The BCMJ maintains editorial independence from Doctors of BC so that it can be a vehicle for fair critique of the association and expression of ideas that the association may not endorse. Though the BCMJ Editorial Board is a standing committee of the Doctors of BC Board of Directors, BCMJ Editorial Board members are chosen by the Editor-in-chief, not by the association’s Governance Committee, and the Editor-in-chief is chosen from among the existing Editorial Board. In this manner, the BCMJ renews itself independently of the association. Doctors of BC Board, President, other committees, CEO, and staff do not direct or attempt to direct content in the journal other than in their designated columns (e.g., President’s Comment).
