Doctors of BC awarded its annual $1000 scholarships for 2022 to Ms Amaris Richardson and Ms Asha Singhal. The commendable recipients were chosen from an abundance of highly impressive applicants.

Ms Amaris Richardson is enrolled at the University of Alberta in the Secondary Education program and hopes to become a French immersion high school history teacher. She grew up volunteering in child care and outreach services and by working with youth was able to learn about the field of education that she is entering. Throughout high school in Kelowna, Amaris was a teacher’s assistant for a teacher who had a very positive influence on her life and made her interested in the subjects she has chosen to pursue. In her free time, Ms Richardson enjoys reading, baking, and spending time with friends and family.

Ms Asha Singhal is a graduate of J.N. Burnett Secondary School, in Richmond. She is currently in her first year of nursing school at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. She has been teaching sexual health education with Vancouver Coastal Health’s BLUSH program for about a year and helped write parts of the workshop programs over the past summer. She has recently started teaching standard first aid to high school students and hopes to spark other students’ interest in careers in paramedicine and nursing. Ms Singhal plans to pursue a career in either nursing or medicine. In her spare time, she enjoys skiing, skating, and swimming with friends.

For more than 15 years, Doctors of BC has presented the scholarship award to children of members in good standing who are completing high school and planning to continue studies at a recognized postsecondary institution. About the ICMJE and citation styles

The ICMJE is small group of editors of general medical journals who first met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1978 to establish guidelines for the format of manuscripts submitted to their journals. The group became known as the Vancouver Group. Its requirements for manuscripts, including formats for bibliographic references developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), were first published in 1979. The Vancouver Group expanded and evolved into the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which meets annually. The ICMJE created the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals to help authors and editors create and distribute accurate, clear, easily accessible reports of biomedical studies.

An alternate version of ICMJE style is to additionally list the month an issue number, but since most journals use continuous pagination, the shorter form provides sufficient information to locate the reference. The NLM now lists all authors.

BCMJ standard citation style is a slight modification of the ICMJE/NLM style, as follows:

  • Only the first three authors are listed, followed by "et al."
  • There is no period after the journal name.
  • Page numbers are not abbreviated.
