Dr Chung Ngar Wong was born in Hong Kong on 13 June 1933. An only child, he lived with his parents in a one-bedroom apartment during the war years, eventually graduating from Pui-Ching High School in Hong Kong in 1952.

Due to the introduction of modern highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) people living with HIV are now less likely to develop AIDS-related cancers. However, a recent study published in HIV Medicine shows women living with HIV still have a higher likelihood of being diagnosed with certain cancers when compared with the general population. This trend primarily involves cancers with underlying infectious causes such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis.

Researchers at the Child and Family Research Institute (CFRI) BC Children’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia found a genetic variation that brings a 5-times higher risk of heart damage for cancer patients treated with a type of chemotherapy drug called anthracyclines.
