Volunteer in rural Guatemala and make a difference. Project HANDS, a BC-based NGO, is seeking volunteers for a medical triage trip from 11–20 February 2011. 

General surgeons, gynecologists, anesthetists, family practice physicians, and emergency room physicians are needed to help select patients for upcoming surgical teams.

UBC recently launched two new tobac­co reduction resources for pregnant and postpartum women and expectant and new fathers who smoke: Couples and Smoking: What You Need to Know When You are Pregnant and The Right Time… The Right Reasons… Dads Talk about Reducing and Quitting Smoking.

In June, Providence Health Care ex­panded its Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise (RACE) program to provide family practice physicians, community specialists, and house staff in the Vancouver Coastal Health region with access to telephone advice from PHC cardiologists, endocrinologists, respirologists, and nephrologists Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BC scientists have developed an ex­perimental drug shown to shrink pros­tate cancer tumors in a laboratory environment. The drug, EPI-001, targets a protein believed to be res­pon­sible for the fatal progression of advanced-stage prostate cancer. 

Re­search is being conducted by Dr Marianne Sadar, senior scientist at the BC Cancer Agency, and Dr Raymond Andersen, a professor at the University of British Columbia.
