Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common procedures performed by the general surgeon. In the United States alone, approximately 750 000 inguinal, 25 000 femoral, and 166 000 umbilical herniorrhaphies are performed each year.[1] While research historically has focused on ways to minimize recurrence rates, endpoints for many recent studies have involved quality of life following repair—particularly in relation to postoperative pain and return to work or athletic activities.
