BC shines at Kaiser Foundation Awards
Created over 25 years ago, the Kaiser Foundation aims to raise awareness and understanding of mental health and addiction and holds the National Mental Health and Addiction Awards each year to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work being done by individuals in these areas. This year, BC received three awards.
Vanessa Campbell—Excellence in Youth Leadership
Ms Campbell’s dedication to improving the social conditions of Canadian youth is seen in her commitment to her three jobs. As Youth Outreach Coordinator for the Musqueam Indian Band, Ms Campbell leads and designs multiple programs, including a youth suicide prevention initiative. She also teaches parents how to read to children as part of the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) Canada and is a teaching assistant in the UBC linguistics department, where she assists students in the Musqueam language course.
Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU)—Excellence in Community Programming
An organization working in the areas of public health, human rights, and advocacy, VANDU was born out of the public health emergency of the 1990s that saw high rates of hepatitis C, HIV infection, and fatal overdoses among drug users in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Beginning with public meeting in parks, VANDU now operates a drop-in centre and provides a range of educational and support programs.
Sherry Mumford—Excellence in Leadership
A leader in addiction services in the Fraser Health Authority in BC for over 2 decades, Ms Mumford has been instrumental in increasing the range and amount of support, funding, and programs available to those with substance use problems. Her peers have recognized her as an educator and collaborator who can build relationships with researchers, stakeholders, and community members. Ms Mumford is credited with helping to move the substance-use field forward and initiating prevention and treatment programs.
Congratulations to the winners.
