BCMA Torch Relay Team

On 5 February 2010, 1 week before the Olympics begin, 20 BCMA members will be running as a team in the Olympic Torch Relay. Winding our way through Olympic Park in the heart of Whistler, we will not run far--but we will run with enthusiasm. The distance is 1 km, with each runner carrying the torch for 50 metres. 

The runners include Drs Brian Brodie, Mark Schonfeld, Bill Mackie, Brad Fritz, Ron Wilson, Mark Crossman, Roy Purssell, Harvey Strecker, Joanne Young, Gavin Stuart, Heidi Oetter, Mike Golbey, Geoff Appleton, Victor Huckell, John O’Brien-Bell, Kathleen Cadenhead, Ms Sharon Shore, Mr Rob Hulyk, and Mr Vince Lee.

The torch was lit in Olympia, Greece, and traveled across the ocean to Canada, where it is being carried by hand in a 106-day, 45000 kilometres trek from coast to coast, ending its journey at the Olympic stadium and lighting the Olympic flame, signifying the beginning of the Games. 

Passing the eternal flame between ordinary and extraordinary people of this great nation, the torch symbolizes harmony and goodwill, peace and friendship, and hope and understanding.

We are all very proud and excited to be a part of history and run in the 2010 Torch Relay representing the doctors of British Columbia.

About the ICMJE and citation styles

The ICMJE is small group of editors of general medical journals who first met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1978 to establish guidelines for the format of manuscripts submitted to their journals. The group became known as the Vancouver Group. Its requirements for manuscripts, including formats for bibliographic references developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), were first published in 1979. The Vancouver Group expanded and evolved into the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which meets annually. The ICMJE created the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals to help authors and editors create and distribute accurate, clear, easily accessible reports of biomedical studies.

An alternate version of ICMJE style is to additionally list the month an issue number, but since most journals use continuous pagination, the shorter form provides sufficient information to locate the reference. The NLM now lists all authors.

BCMJ standard citation style is a slight modification of the ICMJE/NLM style, as follows:

  • Only the first three authors are listed, followed by "et al."
  • There is no period after the journal name.
  • Page numbers are not abbreviated.
