VGH team develops provincial burn guidelines
Plastic surgery resident Dr Sol Gregory and anesthesiologist Dr Mark Vu have led a multidisciplinary team at Vancouver General Hospital to develop BC’s first clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of major burns in adults.
Major-burn patients are extremely complicated to manage, and the first 24 hours are critical—up to 50 people may be involved in care of the burn victim, including paramedics, nurses, family physicians, plastic surgeons, and intensive care physicians. The new guidelines will help to ensure that all care providers are working toward the same goal, communicating effectively, and using the same treatment plan, by providing a standardized care model to minimize confusion and complications.
The new guidelines will be presented at regional and national conferences in plastic and trauma surgery, emergency medicine, critical care, anesthesiology, and family medicine.
