Doctors of BC has awarded its annual $1000 scholarships for 2025 to Ms Simone Boileau and Ms Sophia Howie. The recipients were chosen from a large pool of impressive applicants.
Ms Simone Boileau will be starting the third year of her bachelor’s degree at the University of Ottawa in September, where she is studying international relations along with French and Spanish. While studying in Ottawa, she has interned for various members of Parliament, giving her additional understanding of Canada’s system of government and the issues most pressing to many Canadians. Over the last few years, Ms Boileau has also volunteered for Dyslexia Canada, helping with research tasks and advocacy meetings to further the organization’s mission of ensuring all children in Canada receive equitable education and are taught to read from a science-backed practice. After completing her undergraduate degree, Ms Boileau hopes to attend law school.
Ms Sophia Howie is in her second year at the University of Calgary, working toward a bachelor of science in exercise and health physiology in the Faculty of Kinesiology. The program allows her to integrate her interests in science and physical activity in a meaningful way. While Ms Howie is still exploring various career paths, she hopes to work in a field that allows her to stay connected to the athletic community and promote the value of exercise for overall health and well-being. In her spare time, Ms Howie loves reading and maintaining an active lifestyle. She coaches masters swimming and youth water polo and volunteers on various research projects that explore how exercise can be used to treat health conditions. As a water polo athlete, physical activity and athletic performance have long been central to her life, and she is committed to sharing this passion with others.
