Clinicians responsible for caring for critically ill patients must possess the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills needed to manage such patients. The management of the airway, the A in the ABCs of resuscitation, has deservedly become a focus of intensive education.
George Kovacs and Adam Law, the editors and lead authors of this textbook, are part of a group of emergency physicians and anesthesiologists who developed and taught the Airway Intervention and Management in Emergencies (AIME) course to thousands of emergency physicians and other acute care providers.
The text presents, in a concise, accessible, and practical style, the anatomy, physiology, clinical decision making, and techniques and devices used in the emergency department and the pre-hospital setting. A wealth of clinical scenarios, ranging from CNS, cardiovascular, respiratory, and critically ill patients, to pediatrics and geriatric patients and recommended approaches are presented. In addition to rapid sequence intubation, the authors present various approaches to patients with potentially difficult intubation and ventilation.
This text is intended for acute airway providers and it is a great educational resource for all of us involved in delivering acute care to critically ill patients.
