Dr Herman Hellerstein grew up in the mining town of Dillonvale, Ohio, where he witnessed firsthand the effects of poverty and poor working conditions on people. He attended medical school at Western Reserve University and soon found himself drawn to cardiology. A dedicated researcher, he examined hearts in 2000 consecutive autopsies to determine the incidence of cardiac disease.[1] He studied methods to correlate ECG findings with infarct territory, and worked to make ECG machines more usable in the office and hospital settings.
