The Emergency Medical Services Committee (EMSC) has played an important role for Doctors of BC over the past 50 years. Functioning under the umbrella of the Council of Health Promotion, the committee was established to be the formal medical liaison with the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles (OSMV) in BC. Its purpose was to address medical issues affecting safe driving in British Columbia and to look for solutions.

At a recent Finding Medical Evidence session presented by College librarians, a doctor mentioned that it is difficult to search for articles on physician wellness. Using the Medline database through the College’s website (www.cpsbc.ca/library/search-materials/databases), a search for the phrase physician wellness returns only 17 results. This phrase doesn’t map to a MeSH term—that is, Medline has not designated an official term for this concept.

The routine administration of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine has been associated with a considerable reduction in chickenpox-related morbidity. Considering the vast number of vaccine doses administered in both community and tertiary care, short-term side effects of vaccination are relatively uncommon. Late-onset adverse reactions such as zoster (shingles) are even more uncommon. In 2013, one such late complication was seen in BC in the form of vaccine-related herpes zosteriform dermatitis.
