In the article “Practical and strategic pain management in residential care” [BCMJ 2013;55:85-89], an important component of care is not discussed: physiotherapy. Muscle exercise is important—often a painful muscle is a weak muscle. Graduated weight lifting can rebuild muscle and increase the well-being of residents. Even those with cognitive impairment can benefit.
Osteoarthritis is common in the residential care setting, and physiotherapy can also help in the management of this debilitating condition.
