The UBC Medicine Spring Gala is a yearly celebration of the visual and performing arts where UBC medical students come together to showcase their talents and passions from outside the medical realm. It is a beloved event that brings together the entire medical community and promotes connection, healing, and shared appreciation of creative expression.
This year, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the show has been adapted for a virtual format. The goal is to allow UBC medical students and the general medical community to reconnect after a year apart and to highlight the resiliency of our community through these extremely challenging times.
The show will take place live online on Saturday, 15 May at 7 p.m., featuring performances including instrumentalists, vocalists, and dancers, all from a variety of styles and genres. It will also feature an art show of incredible visual artworks created by medical students and alumni for the audience to view before, during, or after the show.
In the continued spirit of the Spring Gala, all proceeds from the 2021 gala will go toward Aunt Leah’s Place, a local charity that works to help prevent children in foster care from encountering homelessness and to support mothers in need from losing custody of their children. To further support Aunt Leah’s Place, a silent auction has been organized, which features a variety of artworks, items, and gift cards kindly donated by local artists and businesses.
Tickets for the show are by donation (please do not feel obligated to donate!), and are available at: https://trellis.org/medgala2021. The website also provides more information about Aunt Leah’s Place, the silent auction, the art show, and will allow you to access the livestream of the online performances on 15 May.
A performance isn’t complete without an audience. Students, alumni, friends and family, and other members of the medical community are an essential part of this celebration every year. UBC medical students would be honored to have your support and attendance on 15 May!
