Every year, over 800 residents and subspecialty fellows rotate through Vancouver General Hospital/UBC Hospital and GF Strong Centre. Although historically regarded as learners, residents and fellows provide an invaluable clinical service to the collective institution. Without their clinical contributions, the institution could not function in its current form.

The inaugural Vancouver General Hospital–UBC Hospital–GF Strong Resident Recognition and Appreciation Night was held on 29 May 2023. In the Paetzold Auditorium of Vancouver General Hospital, the Vancouver Medical, Dental, and Allied Staff Association (VMDAS) and the administration of Vancouver Coastal Health formally recognized the clinical contributions of its residents and fellows as outstanding health care professionals. Prior to the event, each specialty group (i.e., department, division, section, and special program) was invited to nominate up to 10% of their trainees for their clinical service and other contributions to the institution that exceeded expectations (academic recognition remains the domain of the University of British Columbia via its training programs). Staff physicians and surgeons in specialty areas were asked to consider the contributions of each of their trainees during the nomination process.

We are proud to acknowledge 50 trainees selected for this inaugural recognition.

The VMDAS intends to continue this program annually. The program and event were supported by a generous award for Innovation in Workplace Wellness from the Dr Mas Yukawa Foundation. The foundation, based at the University of Alberta, is dedicated to wellness among health care professionals. We are proud to have been selected as the first non-Albertan recipients of this award.
