British Columbia is the first province in Canada to make prescription birth control free to its residents. Starting 1 April 2023, PharmaCare will cover the full cost of many prescription contraceptives, including:

  • Oral contraceptives
  • IUDs—hormonal and copper
  • Hormone implant
  • Hormone injection
  • Emergency oral contraceptives (no prescription needed)

Information for health professionals, including how the process works, procedures for prescribers and pharmacists, a list of free contraceptives, details on accessibility and cultural safety, and additional resources, is provided at www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/practitioner-professional-resources/pharmacare/contraceptives [9].
